And now for a little photo essay on my Adventure In Kool-Aid Dyeing.
I started out by researching a bit on how to dye yarn with Kool-Aid. I settled on the instructions in this Knitty article. I had one medium hank and another smaller hank for my experiment. Luckily my local Safeway was having a 10/$1.00 sale on the Kool-Aid.
Here we have the first small hank. I decided on Arctic Green Apple for the flavor color.
The first step is to add 1 packet of mix per 1oz. of fiber. Pour the packet in the bottom of a microwave safe bowl (big enough to hold your yarn and some water) then add just enough water to dissolve the mix. Next, place your fiber in the bowl with the fruity scented water.
Then fill the bowl with enough water to cover your fiber
Pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes on high. Let it sit for a few minutes then nuke it for another 2 minutes. When the water has turned a murkyish clear it means your yarn has soaked up all of the dye. Rinse gently.
Squeeze moisture out by rolling in a towel and hang to dry.
If you'd like to try a variegated look you can use a turkey baster or syringe to apply the color.
You may want to follow the Knitty instructions for further details on what has been mentioned here.
I can't wait to get some more spun up so I can do this again. I'd love to make a Kool-Aid sweater. Who wouldn't?

How timely! I have yarn soaking right now, and am killing time before I can start adding the kool-aid dye. You might find this link interesting -- it's a color chart of most of the flavor on natural or gray yarn.

I know this is weird, but Ray likes to save the Koolaid points. So if you still have some of those packets left over, would it be possible for you to save them for me? If it's not too much trouble or you're not saving them yourself.
(Like I said, it's weird. My boyfriend is weird. :O )
That green is awesome...it looks like a bowl of finely chopped celery. :)
